I am only in the beautiful city of Austin, Texas for a few days and already I have had my world completely rocked. First, a stop off for some sweets and a local brew. Specifically I am talking about the French Toast cupcake from Sugar Mama's and the local cold brew from Once Over Coffee Bar. This cupcake not only has cinnamon cream cheese frosting, but within the frosting is a tiny little "pool" of real maple syrup with two squares of bacon swimming on top. I know a "pool" sounds weird but here is a picture to prove my point. Also, the coffee was awesome, it had a strong acidity but it tasted great on this 75 degree sunny day.
This place also had the sweetest people working there! I felt completely welcome walking in and they even won cupcake wars. I cannot wait to go back to Sugar Mama's!
Then, the world turned upside down. I went to Elizabeth Street Cafe. They are a French-Vietnamese restaurant specializing in banh mi and noodles. Here's the deal, their breakfast banh mi was on food network and I remember seeing it and my jaw fell on the floor. Here's the thing about this little sandwich, although she be bit little, SHE IS FIERCE! This sandwich has two fried eggs, crispy pork belly, avocado, mint leaves, and house made mayo on a house made baguette. GET AT ME BANH MI!
The pork belly here was absolutely crispy and delicious. I heard the only rival to this pork belly would be the pork belly bun at East Side King's in Austin. I will save that for another entry...
This day would not have been complete without my new friend, Junior. He was at the chili cook off I ran into while exploring South Congress in Austin. Other than stealing other people's little samples of chili, he fell in love with me, well… with my chili.
Check out Sugar Mama's!
Don't forget Once Over Coffee Bar…
And last but not least, my darling breakfast at Elizabeth St.
